The Full-Flow ABFC breakaway coupling incorporating ball valve technology were developed particularly from an economic standpoint in order to bring the pressure loss and flow of these breakaway couplings practically to the level of a smooth pipe, thus achieving safety without any negative side effects.
What distinguishes them from a pipe is simply the operating principle in an emergency. Before drifting ships or tanker trucks or rail tank wagons that move off unexpectedly can cause the hose coupling or the hose itself to tear, the breakaway coupling ensures “controlled” separation.
By means of a predetermined breaking point as in the ABFC, which use three breaking pins whose strength is specially designed for the load line in use and which can easily be replaced.
This separation avoids serious damage to tanks and tankers, flanged systems like the pump or hose-line components. And because the valves close immediately after separation, uncontrolled spillage of media from the hose and pipe side is prevented as are the possible problematic effects on people and the environment.
